Ernest O. Melby Doctoral
Fellowship
The Melby Fellowship honors Dr. Ernest O. Melby, a pioneer philosopher
and advocate of community education. As president of Montana State University,
he worked with other Montana colleges to provide various services and educational
opportunities to local communities. In 1956, he became a distinguished
professor of education at Michigan State University, a position he held
for 20 years. In 1976, he accepted a distinguished professorship at Florida
Atlantic University where he had served as a consultant and lecturer for
the Center for Community Education. The Melby Fellowship provides an annual
stipend of $10,000 for doctoral studies in FAU's College of Education,
Department of Educational Leadership.
Melby Fellowship Requirements

Admission to the Doctoral program in the Educational Leadership Department.

Evidence of field experience in community schools/community education.

Evidence of knowledge of the history and philosophical tenets of community
education.

Evidence of a commitment to pursue a career in community education.

Evidence of community leadership and service.

May not hold outside employment during fellowship year.

Must pursue a dissertation topic focused on community education.
How To Apply:

Prepare a vita that gives evidence of both the Melby Fellowship requirements
and the admission requirements of Florida Atlantic University.

Send a copy of your vita along with transcripts to the Ernest O. Melby
Community Education Center.

Arrange for at least three written recommendation from individuals who
know of your past efforts and experience in the field of community education.
Finalists will be invited for personal interviews to be held on the Florida
Atlantic University campus, Boca Raton, Florida.
