Eminent Scholar Chair
in Community Education, C. S. Mott Professor
The Eminent Scholar Chair in Community Education was established in 1981
as Florida Atlantic University's first chair under the state of Florida
program that now matches $600,000 in private donations with $420,000 in
state funds to set up a $1.02 million endowment. It was named in honor
of Charles Stewart Mott, of Flint, Michigan, who is credited with founding
the community education movement that has seen public educational facilities
used as year-around community lifelong learning centers.
FAU's Eminent Scholar Chair is the nation's first endowed chair in Community
Education. The private donations to establish the chair were provided by
three of Florida Atlantic University's long-time community education supporters:
-
The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation
-
The Pearlson Family Fund
-
The United States Sugar Charitable
Trust
Holders of the Eminent Scholar Chair are responsible for
providing visionary and pragmatic leadership for community education development
