HARRY M. HARMES DOCTORAL SCHOLARSHIP
The Harry M. Harmes Doctoral Scholarship makes funds available to doctoral candidates in the Department of Educational Leadership’s Higher Education or School Leadership programs. The Scholarship was established in 2001 to honor Harry M. Harmes, a founding faculty member of the College of Education. Dr. Harmes left his position as Principal of Merrit Island Elementary School to join the Florida Atlantic University College of Education when it opened in 1964. He devoted 32 years to the development of the College of Education and Florida Atlantic University, serving as professor, Associate Dean for Continuing Education, and Associate Vice President of Academic Affairs–a position that involved the management of the University’s academic budget. As a university administrator and professor, Dr. Harmes was recognized for his high ethical standards, sharp intellect, commitment to fairness, and concern for others. He believed in attracting individuals of high character and ability to the field of education.
AMOUNT OF AWARD: An award of $500 is made annually.
ELIGIBILITY: To be eligible, a student must: 1. Have been admitted to candidacy in the Department of Educational Leadership’s program in Higher Education or School Leadership. 2. Have demonstrated high academic achievement in the Doctoral Program. 3. Exemplify the professional and ethical standards for which Dr. Harmes stood.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: 1. Prepare a letter of application that describes the special achievements and characteristics that the student believes qualifies him/her for this scholarship. 2. Provide a current transcript and a current vita. 3. Arrange for at least two written recommendations that speak to the student’s professional and ethical standards. These recommendations should be sent directly to the Harmes Scholarship Committee.

NOTIFICATION OF AWARD: April 1, annually
AWARD DATE: August 1, annually
