ERNEST O. MELBY DOCTORAL INTERNSHIP
The Ernest O. Melby Internship makes funds available to a student enrolled in the Department of Educational Leadership who is interested in the field of Community Education/Community Schools. The Internship honors Ernest O. Melby, a pioneer in Community Education. During his distinguished career, Dr. Melby served as Dean of Northwestern University and President and Chancellor of the Montana State University system, and in the late 1940's and early 1950's Dean of Education at New York University. His career interest in Community Education prompted Michigan State University to invite Dr. Melby to join the faculty as a distinguished professor and special consultant to the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation. In 1965 Dr. Melby accepted a distinguished professorship at Florida Atlantic University where he founded and served as consultant to Florida Atlantic University’s Center for Community Education. The Center was named in his honor in 1989.
INTERNSHIP AMOUNT: The award of a $10,000 stipend is made annually.
ELIGIBILITY: Students, who are (a) enrolled in the Department of Educational Leadership, (b) have full-time residential status, and (c) will not hold outside employment during the internship year, are eligible to apply.
APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: Applicants must: 1. Provide evidence of field experience in Community Education/Community Schools. 2. Provide evidence of knowledge of the history and philosophical tenets of Community Education. 3. Show a commitment to conduct dissertation research in related to Community Education. 4. Provide evidence of community leadership and service. 5. In conjunction with the C. S. Mott Professor, develop an academic experiential learning plan to advance the support and development of Community Education. 6. Arrange for at least three written recommendations that speak to the student’s past efforts and experience in the field of Community Education. These recommendations should be sent directly to the Ernest O. Melby Community Education Center.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: March 1, annually Finalists will be invited for an interview held on FAU’s Boca Raton Campus.
NOTIFICATION OF AWARD: April 1, annually
AWARD DATE: August 1, annually
SUBMISSION: Send a current vita that gives evidence of both the Melby Internship requirements and the admission requirements of Florida Atlantic University, a current transcript, and the names of the individuals asked to provide recommendations to: Ernest O.
